Space Design
September, 2023 (duration- 3 weeks)

Group members- Aditi Shinde, Om Kalra, Suhani Sharma
Mentors- Archana Singh

This project is done as a part of our classroom project called Space Design. All the students visited Bhawani Island, the largest river island in India. And picked a space that we felt had potential for development. The water sports waiting area was one space that was active and chaotic. Everything there was temporary, making it unorganized and taking away from the experience of enjoying water sports. Hence, my group decided to make this space our subject for the project.

Process followed

  1. Studied the space, sketched, took measurements and wrote down observations

  2. Analysed the observations, mapped the elements of the space

  3. Made rough orthographic views and section view

  4. sensory mapping

  5. Ideation

  6. Mock scale model

  7. Final scale model

Design Brief-

How might we design an intervention in the water sports waiting area that provides alternative activities to experience river water safely and serve as a mode of entertainment and relaxation for people who cannot or do not wish to engage in water sports activities.

For our final concept, we tried to use the entire space for seating and movement. We divided it into 2 zones: separating people who’re going for water sports from the rest. To make the space accessible and more inclusive for the latter, we took benefit of the natural topography and connected all the major interactive zones with a ramp. The circular forms inspired by lotus pads, extend to water as floating pods, where anyone can interact with water.
