Papermaking | material innovation

June, 2022 (Duration- 2 weeks)

Mentor- Ajay Prasad

In the material exploration class, we had the opportunity to delve into paper-making. Throughout the course of two weeks, we were able to create a diverse range of papers, each with its own unique properties and thicknesses. Our creations included recycled paper, paper made from banana fibres, paper dyed with natural materials, paper made from bamboo chips and fibres, watermarked paper, paper embedded with real flowers, paper made from wool, and paper made from banana pulp. As we became more familiar with the materials, we were able to add our own creative touches to make each piece truly original.

My final outcome is Greenway. This product aims to cater to the needs of the vast Indian population that commutes by train. With the pandemic outbreak, travellers have embraced the practice of carrying homemade meals and utensils for long train journeys. While portable handwashing soap is readily available, the absence of on-the-go dish-cleaning products has led to the use of single-use plastic containers. Greenway provides a solution with its single-use, biodegradable dishwashing scrub, crafted from banana stem and bamboo chip paper. It efficiently eliminates oil stains from dishes and is gentle on the environment when disposed of. The scrub comes pre-soaped and requires only water to use.
