Background
In co-living arrangements, people may share living space, yet not their social, professional, or personal lives. In such circumstances, it can be difficult to keep track of each person's comings and goings. Additionally, there are common services like maids, cooks, and laundry people who might visit in the absence of everyone.

It is not uncommon for people to conceal their keys around the house for friends and family, or give them to their maids, but that poses a risk to their privacy and safety.

Design brief
How might we create an intervention that allows homeowners to easily monitor and control access to their property in their absence?

Relevance- Co-living arrangements are becoming popular as an increasing number of students and interns have started travelling to other cities, and countries to pursue opportunities.

Frequency- The problem affects the user and their flatmates on a daily basis.

Research process-
Secondary research-

  • Types of locks, doors, market analysis

Primary research-

  • Formed a focus group.

  • Studied the lifestyle, schedule and movement of people in and out of the flat.

  • Understood the current system they rely on.

  • Identified the communication gaps.

User Needs-

  1. Access- Have access to the house without relying on/disturbing others

  2. Backup method of unlocking- Multiple ways of unlocking

  3. Tracking movement of people- To keep track of who is always entering/leaving the house.

  4. Remote access- To be able to unlock the lock remotely without sharing the access to a large number of people

My proposed solution is a smart lock that streamlines the process of securing your home before leaving. This lock doubles as a communication hub, serving as a constant presence in your household. It enables you to stay in touch with anyone pertinent, including friends who drop by while you're out and housekeeping personnel who may lack a smartphone yet still need task-related updates.

Iterations

How does it work?

It can be unlocked using bio-metrics, and a passcode, or can be opened through the app(remotely) by only the members of a house. It updates the info accordingly on the app, hence at all times people know about each other's whereabouts. It will also help you keep track of the number of days your maid visited through its data update system.
