Reimagining Samsung smartThings as your real home and designing use-cases and features of smartThings taking advantage of the concept of map view.​

What is Mapview?

It is a digital representation of your living space with a floor plan and connected smart devices pinned to each rooms.

Why is Mapview needed?

  • As users add more devices to their smart home, managing devices through long lists can get frustrating.

  • The user has to remember the name of each device and where it is located.

  • The current experience feels disconnected from an actual home.

How to integrate Mapview in the smartThings app?

To find opportunity areas we studied the working of smartThings app, applications of Mapview and users parallely.

  1. Mapview is by IKEA to help people visualize IKEA furniture in their homes

  2. Mapview is used by the UCSF health system to keep a check on the plumbing and electrical wiring roadmap of hospital buildings to find faults and do quick repairs

Case study

Mr Venkat has been living in Cupertino USA. He is a tech enthusiast and a curious experimenter who has slowly transformed his home into a smart home starting in 2017.

​

He started with basic Smart devices such as smart lighting, door locks, thermostats, and later Smart TV, Smart refrigerator. The Hub he used to connect devices initially, don't connect the TV and fridge in the system. So he got another one to operate those two devices. 

​

With all the confusion from using two hubs, only he could understand and use smart device automation. He also had to do extensive research before buying any new addition. He says is it

"Too much pain for not much gain"

Through research analysis using the mentioned tools, we came up with 4 use cases for the feature of map view that were related to personalization, exploring new features and automation.​
